Come get your groove on next Saturday, January 21st.
The return of Sixties’ soul singer Mickey Murray! Back in 1967, Mickey Murray had a million-selling single on his hands with his version of Otis Redding’s Shout Bamalama, released on Sun Records’ SSS International label. Mickey toured with Wilson Pickett, opened regularly for Aretha Franklin, and hung out with James Brown, which helped Mickey get a new record deal with King Records in 1968, yielding the LP People Are Together. The album was controversial because of racially-charged lyrics, and received little radio play. According to Mickey, it may not even have had a proper retail release, with a few copies remaining only as a “promo” obscurity that collectors occasionally dig out.
This is where local label Secret Stash enter the picture. They’re reissuing the entire LP, as well as a 45 that Mickey originally released on Federal Records. The evening will start with a DJ set from 89.3 The Current staffers Jim McGuinn and Bill DeVille, followed by a DJ set from Hipshaker DJs Brian Engel and Greg Waletski, and concluding with a live performance by Mickey Murray himself!
