Afropop Worldwide: Aar Maanta

Did you know that the Twin Cities have the largest Somali population outside of East Africa? An estimated 30,000 Somali immigrants live in Minnesota, 8,000 of whom reside within the one square mile of the Cedar Riverside neighborhood. 

Learn a little bit more about Somali/British vocalist, composer, and musician, Aar Maanta, in this 2009 interview from Afropop Worldwide. Next week, leading up to his concert on the 26th, Aar Maanta will be doing a residency at The Cedar. If anyone remembers, he was supposed to headline our third annual Global Roots Festival last September, but his visa was denied. We can’t wait for the band to arrive safely and put on a great first show in Minnesota.
